What’s one thing that can help you attain a balanced life or prevent you from moving closer to it? Passion!
Whether we realize it or not we are our own best and worst enemy when it comes to getting what we want most.
Just as there are 7 key areas of life (Finance, Family, Friends, Fitness, Field, Faith and Fun), there are 14 key emotions that can help or prevent us from having a balanced life. These emotions can be placed in 2 categories: Accelerators and Blockers.
Each of the 7 accelerators help us to move closer to our goals and each of the 7 blockers throw up road blocks that slow us down and can even stop our progress altogether.
Passion is the first of the Accelerators I want to talk about. Passion motivates you to do something when you are running low on energy. It puts spring in your step and gets you out of bed in the morning – even on weekends! It also gives you the drive to overcome the Blockers of fear, anger and laziness.
I’ve always pushed hard against having a passion. I know that sounds crazy but I kept running into people with passions that were actually obsessions and I didn’t want to go down that path. But I learned two things from my behavior. First I was missing out on the joy that a passion can and does bring into your life and second, I could rephrase it and just look at it as something that excites me and that I enjoyed doing. Baby steps.
A passion is something you really like to do or something you want to accomplish. You find ways to make room for it in your life. The challenge is to enjoy it/do it without neglecting everything else in your life. Here comes that word again – BALANCE! Balance is key even with passion.
Here’s a few questions for you:
- What are you most passionate about and how do you work it into your life?
- Is your passion one that you’ve had for years or is it something new?
- How does your passion stretch and challenge you to grow and to be a better version of yourself?
- How would you feel if it were no longer a part of your life?
Take a few minutes to ponder these questions about passion – are your answers what you thought they would be?
Maybe your passion is as simple as having that perfect cup of coffee.
And if you don’t have a passion? Maybe it’s time to find one!
